NOTES FROM THE ROAD: A TRAVELER’S PERSPECTIVE (1975 – 2010)
When I bailed from North America in 1975 for points unknown in what we then called the “Third World,” I never imagined that years later I would create a written and photographic record of some of the journeys and adventures. At the time, my motives for travel relied greatly on escape from the narrow confine of North American life and the desire to get as far away from my culture and upbringing as I could possibly manage.
The planet has moved on, to paraphrase Kurt Vonnegut, in innumerable ways since my initial and fateful decision to explore the planet’s hinterlands. My writings describe a world that has largely disappeared in the last forty years and has also become more limited in access. I record the commonalities of the human condition and choose to celebrate how humans are fundamentally the same everywhere and to focus on our similarities, rather than on our differences.
